We often view ourselves in a very fixed way and relate to this sense of self as if it were our true nature. Viewing our self in this way can make us feel that we can’t change, improve, and become a better person and our limitations seem an intrinsic part of our nature (“it’s just who I am”).
Buddha taught that all our suffering and unhappiness arise because our way of relating to ourselves is completely mistaken. Our limitations are illusory, self-imposed, and by training in this wisdom we can clear this confusion and discover and experience our true nature – peaceful, limitless, and free.
